Aero Club Albatross (ACA) is a flying club for glider pilots. Our goal is to promote and enjoy the art of soaring, motorless flight.
We fly year-round from Blairstown Airport (1N7) in Blairstown, New Jersey. The airport is 5 miles from the scenic Delaware Water Gap and the Kittatinny Ridge, and 65 miles from New York City and 100 miles from Philadelphia. We enjoy a wide variety of soaring conditions: thermal, wave, and ridge lift. We have access to hundreds of miles of beautiful, rolling ridges, that stretch across Pennsylvania and beyond. A few 1000 kilometer soaring flights have started and finished here, as well countless hours of local ridge flying within sight of the field. We occasionally achieve climbs to 9,000 feet in thermals or 12,000 feet or more in wave lift. On clear visibility days and with enough altitude, our flyers can see the Catskill Mountains, the Hudson River, and the skyline of New York City.
Blairstown Airport (1N7) has commercial power plane and glider/sailplane operations for rides, instruction, and tows. Weather permitting, tows are available 7 days a week. Contact Yards Creek Soaring for Glider Rides, Glider Instruction, and Glider Tows at Blairstown Airport. We fly our gliders from 1N7's grass runway.
Aero Club Albatross was founded in 1929 by Gustav Scheurer, one of America's aviation pioneers, and has been in continuous operation since then. Our club is open to licensed glider pilots as flying members and non-licensed folks as associate members. We enjoy social events throughout the year, including picnics, glider meets, and an annual banquet. We presently have around 60 members and we welcome new members. We count among our members newly minted pilots up through seasoned cross country and racing pilots, including National Soaring Champions.
